Do's & Don'ts

What you should and should not do after a collision

DO

Seek appropriate health care as soon as possible.

Inform your insurance carrier of the collision.

Keep all receipts for out-of-pocket expenses such as: cleaning services, child care, medical supplies, and prescription medication.

Document the collision by taking photographs of the vehicle involved, the other driver, license plates, and the street name. This is especially important when the police do not respond.

Consult with an experienced personal injury attorney.

DO NOT

Think that your insurance company or the at-fault party’s insurance company are looking out for your best interest.

Settle your personal injury claim while still actively treating.

Sign a health care authorization that allows any insurance company free access to your medical records.

Submit to an Insurance Medical Examination (IME) without first consulting with any attorney.

Post any information about the collision, your injury, or the situation on social media.
